Dear Friends,
It’s been 10 months of epic
disaster. First there was the tsunami that killed some 250,000 people in
It’s enough to make just about
anyone pause to look for meaning in the madness. One can learn how to manage
stress levels from these wild catastrophes. Life is a series of obstacles that
we have to sweep away to clear the path. Things will break down, or break apart
and we will rebuild as we rescue amazing things from the wreckage.
The next time there is a
hurricane, a blizzard, or flu epidemic, one must strengthen beforehand, be
prepared to clear the path and get ready to face anything. It is our moral
obligation to be aware of what is going on around us and to prevent worst case
scenarios from happening...again.

Safety Preparedness – Avian/Bird Flu: The
different categories of respirators (NIOSH approved)
This summary presents a brief overview of what a
respirator potential user needs to know about the new categories of particulate
respirators certified by the National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).
NIOSH has developed a new set of regulations* for testing
and certifying non-powered, air-purifying, particulate-filter respirators.
The new Part 84 regulation provides for nine classes of
filters (three levels of filter efficiency, each with three categories of
resistance to filter efficiency degradation).
The three levels of filter efficiency are 95%, 99%, and 99.97%.
The three categories of resistance to filter efficiency
degradation are labeled N, R, and P.
The class of filter will be clearly marked on the filter,
filter package, or respirator box. For example, a filter marked N95 would mean an N-series filter that is at
least 95% efficient. A respirator marked/named N100
means an N-series filter that is at least 99.97% efficient.
The new classes of non-powered particulate respirators
require new decision logic for selection of the proper respirator:
1. The selection of N-, R-, and P-series filters depends
on the presence or absence of oil particles,
as follows:
2. Selection of filter efficiency (i.e., 95%, 99%, or
99.97%) depends on how much filter leakage
can be accepted. Higher filter efficiency means lower filter
leakage.
3. The choice of face piece depends on the level of
protection needed--that is, the assigned protection factor (APF) needed.
*Changes in the new regulations involve only
non-powered, air-purifying, particulate-filter respirators. Certification
requirements for all other classes of respirators (e.g., chemical cartridges,
self-contained breathing apparatus [SCBA], airlines, gas masks without a
particulate filter, powered air-purifying respirators [PAPRs]
equipped with high-efficiency particulate air [HEPA] filters, etc.) have been
transferred to Part 84 without change.
Note: To help you
remember the filter series, use the following guide:
N for Not
resistant to oil,
R for Resistant
to oil
P for oil Proof
Reminder: Bird/Avian flu is considered, like
other flu viruses, a non-oil particulate - N-series
masks are the most adequate protection.

Today, we live surrounded by
safety items and devices; such apparels are becoming part of our everyday urban
landscape. Nobody wishes to ever having to use any of those protection products
– but to know they are there “just in case”, that should be everyone’s concern.
