Dear Friends,

The UN General Assembly on Monday held a special session to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and honor the soldiers and victims of the war.

Louise Frechette, UN Deputy Secretary-General, told the meeting that as the world looks back to honor the dead and pay respects to the heroes, it was equally important to look ahead and "reaffirm our commitment to the goal of building a world fit for humankind."

"That is the best tribute we can pay to the millions who perished in World War II," she said. "Our work is never done. We are undefeated only because we have continued trying. That is the work of the United Nations, and the reason we are here today."

Today, the biggest enemy has a different face, making the U.N mission even harder than before. Intolerance and Terrorism are our biggest enemy.

Safety Tip and bottom Line

Safety PreparednessBackyard Pools

With the approach of the summer, those valuable tips might save lives – it’s never too soon to be prepared.

Facts and numbers

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in recent years an average of about 250 children under 5 years old drowned in pools nationwide annually. More than half of these deaths occurred in the summer months. Among unintentional injuries, drowning is the second leading cause of death to this age group after motor vehicle incidents. Another 2,700 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for near-drowning incidents. Most of these cases involve residential pools.

Layers of protection

The key to preventing these tragedies is to have layers of protection. This includes placing barriers around your pool to prevent access, using alarms on doors that access the pool, and being prepared in case of an emergency.

Though it seems obvious, close supervision of young children is vital for families with a home pool - and not just when outside using the pool. A common scenario is that young children leave the house without a parent or caregiver realizing it. Children are drawn to water, not knowing the terrible danger pools can pose. Also, just because children know how to swim, doesn't mean they are drown-proof. All children should be supervised every second while in and around the pool.

What can be done?

·         Fences and walls should be at least 4 feet high and installed completely around the pool. Fence gates should be self-closing and self- latching. The latch should be out of a small child's reach. Keep furniture that could be used for climbing into the pool area away from fences.

·         If your house forms one side of the barrier to the pool, then doors leading from the house to the pool should be protected with alarms that produce a sound when a door is unexpectedly opened.

·         A power safety cover -- a motor-powered barrier that can be placed over the water area -- can be used when the pool is not in use.

·         Keep rescue equipment by the pool and be sure a phone is poolside with emergency numbers posted. Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can be a lifesaver.

·         Don't leave pool toys and floats in the pool or pool area that may attract young children to the water.

·         For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured and locked, or removed when the pool is not in use.

·         If a child is missing, always look in the pool first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.

·         Pool alarms can be used as an added precaution. Look for alarms that meet the requirements of the ASTM standard. Safer America advises that consumers use remote alarm receivers so the alarm can be heard inside the house or in other places away from the pool area.

DID YOU KNOW . . . Exactly 25 years ago

On the morning of May 18, Mount St. Helens was shaken by an earthquake of about 5.0 Richter magnitudes, and the entire north side of the summit began to slide down the mountain. The giant landslide of rock and ice, one of the largest recorded in history, was followed and overtaken by an enormous explosion of steam and volcanic gases, which surged northward along the ground at high speed. The lateral blast stripped trees from most hill slopes within six miles of the volcano and leveled nearly all vegetation for as far as 12 miles away. Approximately 10 million trees were felled by the blast.

The landslide debris, liquefied by the violent explosion, surged down the mountain at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. The avalanche flooded Spirit Lake and roared down the valley of the Toutle River for a distance of 13 miles, burying the river to an average depth of 150 feet. Mudflows, pyroclastic flows, and floods added to the destruction, destroying roads, bridges, parks, and thousands more acres of forest.

Simultaneous with the avalanche, a vertical eruption of gas and ash formed a mushrooming column over the volcano more than 12 miles high. Ash from the eruption fell on Northwest cities and towns like snow and drifted around the globe within two weeks. Fifty-seven people, thousands of animals, and millions of fish were killed by the eruption of Mount St. Helens.

By late in the afternoon of May 18, the eruption subsided, and by early the next day it had essentially ceased. The volcanic cone was completely blasted away and replaced by a horseshoe-shaped crater-the mountain lost 1,700 feet from the eruption. The volcano produced five smaller explosive eruptions during the summer and fall of 1980 and remains active today. In 1982, US Congress made Mount St. Helens a protected research area.

Today, we live surrounded by security items and devices; such apparels are becoming part of our everyday urban landscape. Nobody wishes to ever having to use any of those protection products – but to know they are there “just in case”, that should be everyone’s concern.

Have a good week,
