Dear Friends,

President George W. Bush, under fire over a deal giving an Arab firm control over key US port operations, insisted Thursday that the agreement will not weaken US defenses against terrorism.

"People don't need to worry about security. This deal wouldn't go forward if we were concerned about the security for the United States of America," Bush told reporters as he met with his Cabinet.

The US Congress was to hold hearings on the agreement, which unless blocked by lawmakers will let Dubai Ports World of the United Arab Emirates take over operations at key US seaports from a British firm.

US lawmakers, both opposition Democrats and Bush's Republicans, have mounted unprecedented opposition to the deal, charging that Dubai's record against terrorism is spotty and worrying that the administration cut corners in approving the deal.

The White House has said that security at the ports will still fall to the US Coast Guard, US Customs, and US Border Patrol, and that the UAE is a strong ally in the war on terrorism.

Unless blocked, the transaction is to be finalized on March 2, and the ports affected are in New York, Miami, Newark, Baltimore, New Orleans and Philadelphia. One can only hope the final deal will include patching security and safety holes already present…and the ones created by the foreign ownership.

Safety Tip and bottom Line

Safety Preparedness – Business Disaster Plan…

No business should risk operating without a disaster plan

While reports vary, as many as 40 percent of small businesses in the U.S do not reopen after a major disaster like a flood, tornado or earthquake. These shuttered businesses were unprepared for a disaster; they had no plan or backup systems.

When you start to develop your disaster plan, consider three subjects: human resources, physical resources and business continuity. Think about how a disaster could affect your employees, customers and workplace. Think about how you could continue doing business if the area around your facility is closed or streets are impassable. Think about what you would need to serve your customers even if your facility is closed.

Start building your plan now - here are some suggestions your may want to consider:

  1. Keep phone lists of your key employees and customers with you, and provide copies to key staff members.
  2. If you have a voice mail system at your office, designate one remote number on which you can record messages for employees. Provide the number to all employees.
  3. Arrange for programmable call forwarding for your main business line(s). Then, if you can't get to the office, you can call in and reprogram the phones to ring elsewhere.
  4. If you may not be able to get to your office quickly after an emergency, leave keys and alarm code(s) with a trusted employee or friend who is closer.
  5. Install emergency lights that turn on when the power goes out. They are inexpensive and widely available at building supply retailers.
  6. Back up computer data frequently throughout the business day. Eventually, keep a backup tape off site.
  7. Use UL-listed surge protectors and battery backup systems. They will add protection for sensitive equipment and help prevent a computer crash if the power goes out.
  8. Purchase a NOAA Weather Radio with a tone alert feature. Keep it on and when the signal sounds, listen for information about severe weather and protective actions to take.
  9. Stock a minimum supply of the goods, materials and equipment you would need for business continuity.
  10. Consult with your insurance agent about precautions to take for disasters that may directly impact your business. Remember, most policies do not cover earthquake and flood damage. Protect valuable property and equipment with special riders. Discuss business continuity insurance with your agent.
  11. Keep emergency supplies handy, including: Flashlights with extra batteries, first aid kit, tools.

Food and water for employees and customers to use during a period of unexpected confinement at your business, such as if a tanker truck over-turned nearby and authorities told everyone in the area to stay put for an extended period.

It Happened 13 years ago…

February 26th, 1993: World Trade Center bomb terrorizes New York

A suspected car bomb exploded underneath the World Trade Center in New York killing at least five people and injuring scores more.

The bombing shocked America which had seemed immune from acts of terrorism that had plagued other parts of the world.

"It felt like an airplane hit the building" says 34-year-old broker Bruce Pomper, an eyewitness at the scene.

The immense blast happened at 12:18 local time in the Secret Service's section of the car park underneath and between what were New York’s tallest buildings.

It left a gaping hole in the wall above the Path underground station. Most of those who died were believed to have been crushed by the station ceiling. It ripped through three floors of concrete, scattering ash and debris and set off a fire that sent choking smoke and flames up through one of the 110-story "Twin Towers".

Thousands of office workers were trapped as smoke billowed up through the buildings. With no working lifts or lighting there was total pandemonium. People did not know whether to stay in their offices or brave the journey down via the smoke-filled stairwells.

Desperate for air, some people smashed windows with office furniture.

Hundreds eventually poured out of the building gasping for air and covered in soot.

Today, we live surrounded by safety items and devices; such apparels are becoming part of our everyday urban landscape. Nobody wishes to ever having to use any of those protection products – but to know they are there “just in case”, that should be everyone’s concern.

Have a good week,
