Dear Friends,
The government may have to radically change FEMA,
the agency that proved unprepared to help victims of Hurricane Katrina,
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said
Tuesday.
Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, which battered
"We will retool FEMA, maybe even radically, to
increase our ability to deal with catastrophic events," he said in a
35-minute speech at
Chertoff
offered no specifics for changing the Federal Emergency Management Agency but
said FEMA employees must be given authority to cut through bureaucracy to
assist disaster victims quickly. His aides said changes will come early next
year.
One can only hope an organization such as FEMA, as
well as other safety and security governmental agencies, will be up to date for
the New Year to come in order to assure our safety when we cannot assure it
ourselves.

Safety Preparedness –
The holiday season ought to be a happy time - but too
often, it brings tragedy.
Observances of Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's come as
winter weather is intensifying. Some families are taking chances with
supplemental heating at the same time they are decking the halls with risky
lights and other ornaments. More attention is being paid to batteries for new
Christmas toys than for those in smoke detectors.
Please be careful this holiday season. Make safety your
top priority. Take time during the hustle and bustle of decorating, buying
gifts and planning holiday meals to ensure that you aren't taking chances.
If you're making a list, checking it twice, we urge you to
ensure that you are nice to yourself and your family by taking sensible safety
precautions.
Don't take chances with decorative lighting. Check to
ensure that the wiring in your home can handle those hundreds of colored,
flashing lights safely.
If you enjoy a live Christmas tree, don't let it dry out
and become a fire waiting to happen. The same goes for those piles of gift
wrapping discarded in haste.
If you don't have at least one smoke detector in your
home, get one. If you have smoke detectors, be certain that they are operating
properly and that you have ample supply of smoke escape hoods.
If you are using supplemental heating in your home, don't
take chances - with fire or with carbon monoxide.
Last but not least: during the holidays, the
occurrence of candle-related fires jumps by 140 per cent. Pay extra attention
to fire safety during the festive season.
- Use sturdy candleholders with a glass shade around the
candle.
- Keep candles away from flammable items.
- Keep candles away from high-traffic locations where they
can easily be knocked over, especially areas accessible to kids.
Please, take just a few precautions during the next few
weeks. Let's all enjoy happy - and safe - holidays.
